10 Ways to Decorate with Plants

I've always been a plant lover and really love the idea of using plants as a decorating medium. Bringing plants into your home is the easiest way to warm up the space and make it cozy while also detoxifying the air. Right now in Portland we have really bad air quality due to the surrounding fires so my indoor plants are more important now than ever.

Whether you're going for the more minimal look or the more natural jungle-y look, plants add this wonderful unique element to any room. However, if your not very good at the maintenance aspect of caring for plants, I’ll share alternatives on how to achieve the look without the added maintenance! For all the plant nerds/ future plant nerds:) this soil meter is a great TOOL if your wanting to up your game, taking care of your plants! It makes it super simple to see what type of light your plants are getting, the moisture content and PH levels.

If you're going for the more minimal look make a plan first, don't impulse buy! Pick the spot you think the room’s design needs a plant, understand how much light it will receive (and then do some research to find a plant that will look good but will also get the correct lighting it needs! After you've decided on a plant, choose the perfect container, if you are going for a more minimal look, do not underestimate to the importance of the container’s aesthetic!

If your going for the more eccentric maximal look, this is where it’s more ok to impulse buy. I like to have a nice contrast of textures and sizes and mix in some more unique [/expensive] plants with some more affordable “filler” ones.

Plants not only can look fantastic in your home but they are also a great way to clean out toxins in the air as well. Check out some air cleansing plants HERE.

Ok so lets say you love the plant look but aren’t good at the maintenance part….then I have two solutions I would propose.

First one is a bigger investment and still does require some maintenance but definitely gives you a more natural dramatic look. You generally need higher ceilings for this option but buy a tree! Trees can bring in a very dramatic natural wow factor, but because its an investment I highly recommend contacting a professional to install and consult on what species is best for your lighting conditions and ceiling height. Having a company install is similar in cost to furniture delivery and is totally worth the investment! If your in Portland let me know and I can give you a referral!

Second option…. I would recommend is just cutting bush or tree limbs and place them in a oversized vase. Branches can easily last a month, maybe longer depending on the species and this will give you that natural look without the maintenance. Love doing this in the spring as branches are starting to bud!

If you live in an apartment check out your local florist, they usually also will have branches. This will give you the look of plants but will last longer than cut flowers. [Tip: if you want an even morrrrrre low maintenance opt for dried flowers/ foliage!].

Ok so there you have it, now that the winter is coming hunker down and bring in some natural elements to lift your vibrations and clean up the air quality in your home!

Much Love + Big Hugs!
